Ok, so I persuaded one more family member to start a blog. Ben There, Done That is now alive and well in the blogosphere.
Not much to look at now, but give him time.

Good Saturday
We had another one of those "multi-activity" Saturdays, only for this one, I don't have pictures.
Mark and Ben spent the day at Merit Badge University. All the scouts in the council meet up at ETSU and attend workshops in the morning and afternoon that help them knock out requirements for merit badges. Ben went to workshops for Citizenship in the Nation and for Citizenship in the World. All he will tell us is that they talked about Obama and China. Hmmmm. Meanwhile, Mark attended some of the leader sessions - he earned a Red Cross First Aid Certification (he wrapped my arm in a sling when he got home) and went to a forum on rank advancement (still not sure what that was about.)
Daniel had his third soccer game of the season. This was far and away the best game so far. It ended in a tie, but it was all action, all the time. Daniel made the best header I've ever seen in youth soccer. He also ran full-boar into a girl twice his size - they both bounced a few feet before hitting the ground. It looked painful.
And me, well I cleaned the house and made hummus. I used the same recipe, only I subbed two teaspoons of ground ginger for the garlic. And I sprinkled Chinese Five Spice on the pita chips instead of salt. It was a very tasty change.
A good day, all in all.

Season Five
OK, so I'm a huge Lost fan. And I thoroughly, THOROUGHLY enjoyed the season premier. I know lots of fans were dismayed at the thought of the time travel plot, but I think it rocks. I loved the opening scene where Daniel showed up in that tunnel with the Dharma guy.My fellow Lost fans at work have been pondering the current events on and off the island, and we have some theories. If you don't watch Lost, read no further. Just go rent season one and get hooked. But if you are a Lost Geek.....
1. I think the baby in the opening scene will grow up to be Miles.
2. I don't think Locke is dead. I think he arranged to be bitten by one of those Nikki/Paolo spiders.
3. I think the remaining castaways will keep time traveling and we will see a lot of the things that happened in the island's past.
4. I think Sun is not on the up and up. She's a bitter woman. "How's Jack?" my big ole butt.
5. I think the lady at the end is Daniel's mom. The one who reamed Desmond in the antique shop a few seasons back.
6. I think the smoke monster......OK, I still don't really know what to think about the smoke monster.
And there you have it. Any other theories out there?

Thoughts on the Day
So, I didn't vote for Barack Obama. But I am truly excited and proud for America today. And I keep wondering - after all the parties and the hoopla - what it will be like for the Obamas to go home and crawl into bed in the White House? How cool would that be?
And finally, props to Aretha for sporting that hat. She totally pulled that off. Pelosi couldn't have pulled that off. Hillary couldn't have pulled that off. It's good to be Aretha.

The Results Are Varied
So, at least three of us took the Dutch Baby Challenge. That Neil Guy posted his results.
I have also heard, via Facebook, that my cousin Kelly took the challenge, and was unimpressed with the results. I have not seen photos of her efforts, however. (By the way, if my cousin makes a Dutch Baby, does that make it my Dutch Baby once removed?)
So there you have it.

The Dutch Baby. Boo-Yow.
Well, I completed the Dutch Baby Challenge. I think mine performed according to spec.
This is it, right out of the oven:

And this is it, post-deflation:

We ate it "utterly plain" as described in the recipe, and found it tasty, if somewhat bland. It tasted like a low-flavor Yorkshire pudding. And it was really fun to watch.

Saturday Breakfast Challenge
So, That Neil Guy has issued a culinary challenge. (Not so much a challenge really, but it sounds cooler to say it that way, like he took off his oven mitts and slapped me with them or something.) Anyway, he was intrigued by this recipe, and will be making it this Saturday morning. He asked me to make it as well, to see if we get similar results. Since it is a baking experiment, it is likely that we will have wildly varied results.
The funny thing is, this is a recipe for a Dutch Baby. AB made a Dutch Baby on his "Popover Sometime" episode and I was really intrigued by it. It looks like a ginormous Yorkshire pudding.
So I will be preparing a Dutch Baby this Saturday morning, using the above-linked recipe. Wanna try it too? If you do, and if you have a blog, post your results. If you do, and you don't have a blog, email me your results, and I'll post them. If you don't, then fine. Be that way.
Tune in Saturday to see us go dutch, baby.

My New Toy
So, I spent my summer on an excruciating training project. My teammates and I were recently awarded with "The Smoky Mountain Award", which includes $50 and a day off. While I should have just put my $50 in the bank, it came in the form of a gift card, so I felt that I had no choice but to spend it.
I am a HUGE fan of Lodge cast iron cookware. For some time, I have wanted to try their enamel cast iron line. So I used my $50 (and a little extra) to buy a 6-quart dutch oven. It came yesterday:

Resolutionary Road
So, I thought I'd check in and report on my 2009 resolutions.
1. Eat more superfoods. Remember, these were berries, beans, spinach, broccoli, salmon, red bell pepper, kiwi, mango, oatmeal, and nuts. I have been AMAZED at how easily I'm getting these into my diet. I'm getting like five or six of these a day. Maybe not full servings, but they're in there. I've been making berry/banana smoothies for breakfast, and those banana crunch muffins I made this weekend have walnuts and oatmeal in them. I've been adding baby spinach to wraps and sandwiches at lunch. I've made a couple of chicken dishes with red bell pepper and found them tolerable. And I've been happily snacking on hummus and pita chips. The only thing I haven't eaten more often is salmon, which is odd, because I usually eat salmon all the time.
2. Walk more. I haven't done so well with this one. It's been frigidly cold outside. I need to do better. I walked on Monday and when I was done, I thought my ears had frozen off. It made me quite moody for the rest of the day. Maybe I need some ear muffs. Why does exercise always involve special equipment?
3. Grow my own herbs. The parsley has sprouted! The parsley has sprouted!
And there it is. Two weeks in and I have about a 66% success rate. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

A Tale of Three Saturdays
We all got to do some of our favorite things today.
Mark and Ben went hiking with the Scout Troop on Roan Mountain. They went to the sight of the old Cloudland Hotel. The Hotel was on the border between NC and TN, and back in the day when NC was dry, guests had to walk to the TN side of the hotel to get their libations. (Or I may have explained that exactly backwards.) Anywho, it snowed, and while it made for a difficult hike, they did manage to have some fun.

(Brrr. Looks cold.)

And I got to spend a good part of the day in the kitchen.
I made a fruit tart with a yogurt filling. I baked a ready-made pie crust in a tart pan. Then I strained some vanilla yogurt (if you've never strained yogurt, you should - it makes a huge difference) and added a little honey and a little orange zest, and poured it into the crust. Then I placed kiwi, blackberries, and strawberries on top, and lightly spread apricot preserves on them.
I baked some Banana Crunch Muffins to have for breakfast next week. I've blogged on these before - they are a Barefoot Contessa recipe - bananas, granola, walnuts, white whole wheat flour - they make a really good breakfast muffin.
And lastly, although I actually made this first, I tried my hand at making homemade hummus and pita chips. I once again used a Barefoot Contessa recipe for the hummus - chick peas, garlic, lemon juice, tahini, salt and Tabasco in the food processor - it was good! A little too much garlic, or maybe the garlic just wasn't minced finely enough - every now and then you got a big ole bite of it. And the pita chips were good too - I just tore them by hand, then drizzled them with olive oil and salt and baked them at 350 until they turned crispy.
So all in all, everyone had a great Saturday!

Daniel played in his first ever indoor soccer game. He's in a winter 12 and under league. He got to be on Coach T's team, which is always a good thing. D's team won 11 to 1. The scoreboard only had single digits, so it quit ringing up the goals after 9. The pictures are a little dark - it is indoor soccer, after all.

Happy Blogoversary!
That's right, folks! It's been exactly one year since the Creevedog entered the Blogosphere with mixin' it up.
Looks like May was my high point - I rocked out 36 posts. October must have been busy - not much to say in October.
Here's hoping I don't run out of things to say in 2009. It's been real!

New Year's Weekend
We had a rockin' New Year's Weekend. I'll just hit the highlights....
We went to my parent's house on New Year's Day and stopped off at Uncle Paul and Aunt Natalie's for a delicious traditional New Year's dinner. Sam was feeling a little "puny" and slept through most of our visit.
Mom took the boys to the Florence Museum, where they visited with a Samurai warrior. I have no idea what he might have to do with the history of Florence, but it made a cool picture.
Or two.

On Saturday, I met up with three of my good friends from high school. It was really good to see them and catch up. Sadly, Miriam (the one next to me) closed her eyes for the one and only pic. Oh well.

Overall, it was a fun, relaxing weekend with family and friends. A good way to bring in the new year.

3...2...1...Happy New Year Everybody!
Happy New Year!
Last night we had our sixth or seventh annual New Year's Eve Family Game Night (we started this when Daniel was two or three - can't remember exactly - I do remember the first game we played on family game night was Memory - that's something isn't it?) Every year for New Year's, we eat dinner at home (last night we made homemade pizza and bread sticks) and then chase it with a yummy dessert or two (last night we baked chocolate chip cookies and made ice cream sandwiches using homemade vanilla ice cream - Yum!). Then we have a fun night of game playing. Last night's games were Shadows Over Camelot (for the first time in a LONG time, we lost!), Mario Cart, and a hilarious (maybe we were just tired at this point) game of Apples to Apples. We don't stay up until midnight, but we do toast the new year at some point in the evening with sparkling grape juice, and talk about the high points of the past year. Last year had lots of high points. Last night had lots of high points, too. It was a really fun evening.
