The Great Outdoors

Mark and Ben just returned from their first camp out with the Boy Scouts. They camped Friday night on the Virginia Creeper Trail, biked 27 MILES on Saturday, camped again on Saturday night, and came home this morning. If you aren't familiar with the Creeper Trail, it is a former railroad, which means is it flatter than most hiking/biking trails in the area. They biked on the flattest part of the trail - it gets steeper right past Damascus, VA, where they camped - but it was still quite an undertaking. I am very proud of Ben for sticking with it - it was his first time camping and biking a trail like that. Mark said he was quite the trooper (and I imagine Mark was quite the trooper as well!)

I am attaching a few of the pics they took of the campsite, and one aerial shot that I got from the Creeper Trail website - they started in Damascus and biked 13.5 miles to Abingdon, VA (shown on the map - the start of the trail), then 13.5 miles back to their camp.

Ah, we've been talking about making a weekend family trip to ride the Virginia Creeper. It's a Rails to Trails project and I'm told if you ride it downhill it's easy enough for the the whole family. You make it sound a bit tougher. Perhaps we should wait a couple more years.

Way to go, guys! I'm impressed! Christine just learned how to ride her bike without training wheels last weekend and Meredith is getting a new bike this week for her 9th birthday. Maybe we should check it out sometime!

You can take a shuttle to the very top - I think all in all it's about 34 miles - and then you bike downhill the whole way. I think it is considered "easy" if you do that - our youth group does it fairly regularly. If you go back and forth (uphill), it gets tougher.
