Well, I finished World Without End. What a book. Really, really good, although not as good as Pillars. Lots of political intrigue within the church, which makes for very interesting reading. Also, lots of info about the plague in Europe and how devastating that was.
It was good all along, but about halfway through it becomes really, really good.
It definitely was a book to stand on its own - it had some references to characters in Pillars, but you can read it by itself with no problems.
